This was all that I managed to capture, probably around 1996, likely in Fidonet group ZONE3_TECH, but possibly AUST_AVTECH or even AUST_MODEM. RS> Crap, as usual you have a real problem with your comprehension |-) BG> If referring specifically to the SB/SBPro, he is right, but as far as BG> the Roland card is concerned, he is very wrong indeed! RS> Since I actually said was RS>> There is no technical reason why the sound card cant be doing it as RS>> well as the normal audio CD player does, but the cheaper end of the RS>> sound card market doesnt. PE> Sorry Rod, but you also said: No need to be sorry when you are wrong again |-) And as you can see, it was you that said the next bit. PE> Thanks for that Rod. So what price do I need to pay to get that PE> quality? You can get a CD player for $219 (portable CD player PE> including tape deck and radio and speakers). RS> As far as the sound card itself is concerned it also depends on how RS> much you are into the golden ears stuff. Even the top end cards dont RS> have as good audio specs as normal audio CD stuff. PE> That's a pretty firm statement saying that top end cards don't PE> produce CD quality sound. Yeah, I could have said that better. I assumed that you meant to restrict the alts to reasonable costs. For example the better cards like the SB16 and PAS16 etc class stuff will end up costing something of the order of $1K with the PC CDROM drive and not give as good audio quality as the normal audio CD. I agree you did ask about how much it would cost to get the same quality, just assumed that you wouldnt really be interested in the full professional stuff costing $Ks in total when the alt was a $219. I had forgotten how extreme you can be at times and that you maybe would give something like that serious consideration. I've been aware of the top end stuff for a long time. Its been used for digital mastering of CDs and stuff, on Macs too. In fact the better digital mastering of CDs for classical stuff and people like Jarre do that. I just didnt think you were really interested in stuff in that class. Same applys with MIDI stuff. There is lots that can be done below a full muzo setup, but again you appeared to be talking about conventional sound cards, not MIDI. So I WAS WRONG, but only in underestimating how nutty Paul can be at times |-) --- Maximus/2 2.01wb * Origin: Ten Minute Limit (3:711/934)
